How do I get away from my puppy when he bites me without using the crate?

I have tried to ignore my puppy when he starts biting me, but he just keeps coming at me. I even tried shouting "ouch" to show him that has hurt me, but it doesn't seem to affect him. He has torn several of my pj's and has drawn blood on numerous occasions. I don't want to put him in his crate because that would be seen as a "punishment" but I feel trapped when he starts his evening attack.
