Any parents out there not use pacifiers?

I am having my first child in September. One thing I keep hearing is to try not to use a pacifier if possible. But everyone I know that said they were determined not to use them ended up using them anyway. My cousin said her baby is addicted to hers like it were crack. If it falls out of her mouth at night and she can't find it she screams bloody murder and wakes everyone up. Is there anyone out there that didn't use them at all and how did it work out for you? and at what age should they definitely not be using one anymore? I have a nephew who will be two and is still using one.
